The three Am Law 50 firms were not alone in keeping their new partner numbers stable or down from a year ago. Overall, just 44% of businesses reported higher net earnings this year. Compared to the 75% who said they saw additional profit growth in 2023, that represents a considerable decline.

According to Christopher Lovrien, partner-in-charge of Jones Day in Australia, the international law firm plans to grow its Australian business in order to handle more cross-border transactions and serve customers that are under more regulatory pressure. According to Lovrien, the firm currently has 30 partners spread over four offices, with the possibility of adding another 10 or 15 in Australia over the course of the next three to five years.
